Watch this space for details of the next firing - number 47 - scheduled for 15th-16th May 2026
These are some of Bill's pots that were not able to fit in the previous firing.
Bill's various thrown replica pots.Â
Mortaria, lipped bowls.
Maggot Bowls, decorated with twisted cord.
Collared urns.
Bill's replicas of collared urns.
Decorated with twisted cord and applied horse shoe handles. To be fired raw with no glaze, aiming to pick up a toasted finish.
Level by level images of Bill's pots as they were loaded in the back section.
Trying to leave spaces and height for the hot air and flames to circulate during the firing.
The lowest level has the unfired, unglazed urns, in the coolest part of the chamber, where glazes tend to be underfired. The unfired pots need to be heated up slowly to start with, to dry them out carefully - or they will explode as the steam is generated.
The pale unglazed surfaces will turn much darker during the firing, as the iron oxide in the clay is reduced - oxygen is removed from the oxide to produce a darker coloured oxide with more iron and less oxygen.
This is how far Bill got with loading on the first day.
Now waiting for all the other potters to fill the rest of the chamber!!
